Founder - President
Most Venerable Acharya Buddharakkhita Mahāthera (1922–2013) was a great Indian Buddhist monk, scholar, meditation teacher, author and social worker. He was born in Manipur in 1922 and later dedicated his entire life to the study, practice and propagation of the Buddha-Dhamma.
He received Buddhist ordination in 1949 and travelled to Sri Lanka and Myanmar for higher studies and meditation practice. He became well known for his knowledge of Pāli, Tipiṭaka, Abhidhamma and Buddhist meditation. He also contributed to the scholarly work of the Sixth Buddhist Council in Myanmar.
In 1956, he founded the Mahā Bodhi Society, Bengaluru, with the vision of spreading the Buddha’s teachings and serving society through Dhamma education, meditation, monastic training, healthcare and humanitarian activities. Acharya Buddharakkhita was also a prolific writer and translator.
